The original stud Desmond Whitfield Bonsmara’s (LDW) began in 1979 with Afrikaaner Sussex cross on the advice of Mr Ted Birch. The herd sires used were all from the Vryberg area. The original herd grew quickly in the 80’s using embryo cows from breeders such as Mr C Atherstone, Mr R Baragwanath, Mr D Ivy, Mr W Lombard, Mr A MacDonald Mr W van Amstel and Mrs P van Deventer. Top genetics were produced.whitfield ldwAsh and LDW

Sadly the original herd was dispersed in March 1993. Burkhard Hermann of Fortress Bonsmara’s purchased 45 of the top stud cows that day and began his stud herd.

Approximately 50 Golden Oldies were retained from our first herd and the rebuilding phase began. We used quality Stud bulls and in 2000 we re-registered our herd as Ashley Whitfield Trust t/a Whitfield Bonsmara’s (LDW).

In January 2002 on the advice of Erwin Church we bought in 50 top cows from the dispersal of Nonen Bonsmaras, William Arthur Schulze. This was one of the initial Bonsmara herds in South Africa and in 2004 we purchased additional genetics at the dispersal of Lyn Stirk’s Bonsmaras.Whitfileld auctionBul soek 'n Boer

Whitfield Bonsmara’s then built onto these genetics using bulls via natural and AI mating from Fourie Scheepers (CEF), Norton Thompson (NPT), Frans van den Berg (VV), Lawrence and Derek Ralfe (LAR),( JJ Parks (JRP) Justin Stirk (DAJ) the Handley’s (GCD), Gavin Bristow (JRB) and Paul Mare (LMR).
We believe on using ‘Best on Best’ especially out of top Phase D bulls at 14 months enabling us to speed up our breeding programme and has resulted in an even herd of cows.
Our herd consist of 400 cows and open heifers. Every year we hold a  Production Sale selling between 25-30 bulls and about 100 commercial cows/heifers pregnant or with calf.
Erwin Church has worked in our herd since 2002 as well as the Shulze herd for the previous 17 years. His knowledge of the animals and origins go back many years. His expertise has been of great assistance and we are thankful for the years of knowledge he shared with us.

Over the years we have applied a ‘Balanced Breeding Approach’.
