The Whitfield’s have been farming in the Viljoenskroon district since 1896.
Alfred Leo Whitfield, Ashley’s great-grandfather made his way up from the Kimberley Diamond fields in the late 1800’s and with a partner set up a pont on the Vaal River It was a very lucrative operation but they eventually sold their enterprise and Alfred invested his share in the home farm ‘Majespan’.
Ashley’s grandfather Lionel Redvers Whitfield born in 1901 and farmed with his brother Cecil until they split their farming operation and added to their own land.
Lionel’s two sons, Lionel Desmond and Trevor Leo took over from their father when he retired in 1956 to Kroonstad. Trevor farmed on Windsor and subsequently bought a portion of Swartpan retiring in the late 1980’s. Lionel, known to all as Des farmed with his eldest two son’s Llewellyn and Ashley.
The youngest son, Derek is a Geologist and has a very success business in Johannesburg.
In 1993 the farming operation split Llewellyn going into his own business in Kroonstad and Des retired to Umhlanga Rocks, Kwazulu- Natal.

Situated between Kroonstad and Viljoenskroon the Whitfield family have been farming in the Viljoenskroon District since 1896.
Ashley is the 4th generation of Whitfield’s farmers. He started farming in 1983 initially with his late father Lionel Desmond Whitfield and brother Llewellyn.
